Problem to be solved

  • Spread of poxvirus in Brazil.
  • The last cases of smallpox occurred in Rio de Janeiro in 1971. In 1999, the project team confirmed in laboratory infections in cattle and humans in 19 cities of the state of Rio de Janeiro and in other states.

    • Proposed innovation
    Regularly provide subsidies to human and animal health surveillance.

      Differential
      Differential diagnosis of herpes viruses and poxviruses in humans and, between parapoxvirus and orthopoxvirus in animals.

        Stage of development
        Diagnosis in skin samples with skin lesion, sent by the health departments and issuance of laboratory reports.
