Problem to be solved
Lack of consistent measurement instruments for the assessment of waste management systems in the health sector, such as: insufficient data on production, transportation, treatment, destination and final disposal of waste from healthcare services.

Proposed innovation
Construction and adaptation to the Brazilian culture of the “Healthcare Waste management – Rapid Assessment Tool” – HCWM-RAT technology developed by WHO to improve public policies and evaluations in the area of waste management in Brazil.

  • Tool adapted to the Brazilian culture, translated into Portuguese and validated by WHO for utilization in the Brazilian territory.
  • Uses triangulation of methods to collect data.
  • Possesses comprehensiveness for evaluation in health facilities, at municipal and national levels.
  • Allows comparison between studies of national and international evaluation.
